Silverlight Announced

Microsoft Silverlight formerly known by its code name "WPF/E" has now been announced...

Today we announced Microsoft Silverlight at the NAB conference down in Las Vegas. You might have seen the name "WPF/E" in quotes before, signifying that it was a code name, and like all code names, they're eventually replaced with a real product name, especially once they catch on! This time however, we didn't settle for something long, boring and traditional like "Cross-platform Rich Internet Application Foundation." :-) Instead, the product name and brand, "Silverlight" and its corresponding logo called "the nebula" are so much more cooler and exciting.

Video and media playback is one of the key scenarios that’s being highlighted today. Silverlight also provides scriptable and interactive XAML-based vector graphics and animation as you might have seen from the CTPs. These enable some pretty compelling media experiences that should fit right in there with AJAX applications. At MIX07 you’ll see much more of the programming model aspects of the technology that should appeal even more to developers. As I alluded to in my post last week, one of the sessions I’ll be presenting, shows how Silverlight can be used to develop AJAX server controls, and how Silverlight and ASP.NET AJAX play together.

Hi Nikhil,

Thought I'd let you know that there's a slight typo in the title of the post (Sil"i"verlight Announced). Just telling you this to save some minor embarassment.

Awesome! I was hoping they wouldn't name it something ridiculous.

Sorry, but now I am going to have to add this:

Your "CAPTCHA" image is nearly impossible to read. Plus, it expired on me, and when I refreshed my input was NOT preserved. You should definitely revise this section of your blog, becuase it is quite the annoyance.

hi

i've loved the silverlight and was very excited to develop silverlight applications in my company. but i've got a little disappointed when saw that silverlight, like wpf/e in the past, don't support windows 2000, wich is still used in the cooporative market. if microsoft wants to see silverlight beeing more than a flash competitor in the media market, but beeing a platform to develop rich applications, you must pay a little attention on this and launch a windows 2k version of the client...

Okay you do not want to answer this => you need admin rights.

Why should one use WPF/E instead of Flex ?. Flash is (almost) present on all machines and thus has a great advantage.

Anonymous (ummm... Kapil?): currently it does require admin rights, just like other browser plugins (including Flash) - we are however looking at all options to get the best possible user experience, and as well as how to improve that over time.

Every technology has some advantages - different advantages have different values to different developers/applications at different times. There isn't one absolute right answer for all time... plus some choice/multiple options is always a good thing.

Awesome stuff, I can forget about learning to do action scripts for interactive flash animations which is not my strongest area and focus on seamless .NET technologies for that RIA site.
