Lorem ipsum

The roots of "Lorem ipsum ..."
This weekend, I am hoping to complete writing the code to the samples I'll be using for my upcoming PDC talks on authoring ASP.NET Whidbey server controls: WSV401 and WSV402. Hmmm... whats that got to do with "lorem ipsum," and whats that anyway?

For one of my samples, I am in need of some sample text, and I had a vague recollection of the words "Lorem ipsum" that UI designers used in various UI specs I've seen over the past years. Out of curiousity, I google'd for it, and the first thing I hit is a web site dedicated to Lorem Ipsum.

As per the site, "Lorem ipsum" or "lipsum" are the first couple of words used as sample filler text and have been the standard in dummy text since 1500 with its roots in Latin literature from 45 BC. Cool! The reason it is used is that it is less distracting than readable, understandable text while preserving a normal distribution of letters. This comes in handy when the goal is to focus on everything but the actual content of the text.
Heres some sample lipsum:

The site even has a generator that can put together a run of pure, unadulterated lipsum for you.
