Signs of "geekiness"

How you can spot a geek when you see one?
How about sitting with a tablet pc at the visitor center at Hoh Rain Forest in the Olympic National Park? I am willing to bet its pretty high up in the chart. :-)

But I do have an excuse...

My wife, Seema and I decided to take a roadtrip in Western Washington, and as usual I was clicking away at each stop. My digital camera's memory card was soon full, and I needed to get the pictures off of it and onto my computer before carrying on. I knew this was going to be an interesting experience, because I had forgotten to charge the battery. With fingers crossed, I turned on the tablet, and started the transfer. And as you might now expect, the tablet powered down half way through. Luckily I was doing this in the visitor center's parking lot, and so there I was, sitting on a couch by their maps and displays, with my tablet opened and plugged into a power outlet waiting patiently as 150+ pictures made their way onto the harddisk. I am sure the other visitors must have had a chuckle... but I did get my pictures transferred!

Perhaps carrying a tablet with you on a vacation is another sign. Previously my excuse was that I needed to keep up on email. Now its just standard equipment and part of my gear along with my camera, lenses and other miscellaneous accessories!

Hope to post the pictures in a bit, once I've sorted through them.

Funny, I had almost the same geeky experience this week-end in SF (see http://www.fotolog.net/boudin/?pid=8072580 ).
Digital photography enthusiasts end up carrying a laptop everywhere, or buying one of those 4GB compact flash cards. But I guess even that will eventually not be enough as we start shooting uncompressed 8 megapixel pictures...
Sonn, we'll need the DVD burner too, to make some room on the hard drive...

If you vacation in Iowa, you'll be happy to know that all of our rest areas are equipped with Wi-Fi. The home of Gateway seems to encourage geekiness.
