Search Engine Friendly Names

Script# ... I might have inadvertently chosen an non-searchable name...

Last week I posted on Script#... one thing I am realizing is that this wasn't the best of all names from a search engine perspective. Quite uniformly they all lop off the "#". I'll admit I didn't spend a whole lot of time thinking of a name - initially it was just an identifier to associate a set of early ideas, and something that sounded close to C#.

If memory serves me right, I think something similar happened with C# as well... and then finally the search engines got around to special casing it. Perhaps the same could be done here :-) I wonder how that works?

On a different note, thanks for all the comments! Theres definitely been some good feedback and interest. I've also gotten some response from one other team here at Microsoft who has done a fair bit of dogfooding experimenting with the early bits. As a result, I've fixed some issues, and will be posting an update. Stay tuned...

I tried Script#. That's what I was looking for years. I looking forward to new releases.

Thanks.

What I missed about the bits was the fact that I couldn't attach events to all the common events like MouseOver, MouseDown and so forth.

Keep up the good work Nikhil.

I hope you can post updates often - even if small - keep building it and sharing with the community. Gives us a chance to learn the system and adopt it.

Thanks again!

Question:

what is the "roadmap" or "Milestones" to shipping the Atlas bits??

is it bound to Orcas?
will it be a SP1 to VS 2005?
will it be before January or after?
before Thansgiving?

I think this needs to be communicated on the atalas web site so that we can plan for it.

I am not saying "Hurry up!" I am just asking "whats the weather forcast look like?"

thanks!

Microsoft's product line is just stinkin' with names that are hard to search for:
.Net
COM
C#
C++
Basic
Word
Office
SQL Server

I first discovered this problem when trying to set up Microsoft Money to download statements from my credit card companies. Each bank had a different procedure. So, how do you find the page that give the instruction? Searching for "Money" on a bank's web site gives too many false positives. (The answer is to search for "Quicken" since the instructions for both are on the same page.)

This was actually going to be a topic I brought up at the "next" MVP summit I attended. (MSFT decided to drop me from the MVP rolls before I had a chance): Specifically, that every publically announced product and technology should be given an official distinctive "search keyword", be it "csharp" or "msword" or "dotnet" etc, and that MSFT actively promote this keywords for use in discussion that product online.

If I were a search engine developer I'd tackle the problem of what seems like noise after legitimate words by seeing if they occur too frequently to be a coincidence. Maybe when a few hundred thousand people have all 'mis-typed' Script# they will pick it up and include it as a legitimate word... or perhaps they just employ a school leaver to keep the list updated :)
